一般我們學”衣服”clothes這個英文單字，長的就是複數的樣子，沒有單數的用法。很簡單，但不代表clothes是最好的表達方式。英文裡，指衣服、打扮、穿著有更多不同的說法，只會clothes是不夠完整表達的喔！
clothes是從cloth 這個字衍生而來，cloth指的是”布料”，複數是cloths，跟clothes不一樣喔！各種不同材料的布料都可以叫cloth，而從cloth還有另一個衍生的字，叫做clothing。
clothing 的意思基本上和clothes差不多，都不可數，唯一的區別是，clothing強調穿在身上由cloth製成的衣服，而clothes更廣義指的是”穿在身上”的衣服。
attire是更正式稱呼衣服的說法，專指特定場合或用途，通常是質料更好的衣服，像是business attire、casual attire、sports attire、formal attire等等，也可以當動詞用。
一般逛百貨公司的零售商品就會看到 “Clothing & Apparel”的分類。apparel 是對衣服專業的稱呼，在商業廣告(賣衣服)上比較常見，像是yoga apparel 做瑜珈穿的衣服。
還有一個字叫garment，可數名詞，就是(一件)衣服的意思，也等於a piece of clothing，或是an article of clothing 。(量詞用piece和article) pants,、shirts、sweaters、dresses都是garment的一種。
這些對於衣服的稱呼，都算是蠻正式的，但其實平常口語比較少會用到以上這些關於”衣服”的字。
反而，在美國口語裡，衣服、配件(accessories)、等等的整體穿著、打扮，更常用outfit這個字。像是work outfit，指的是上班的穿著打扮。當你聽到有人對你說: Oh, I like your outfit. 就是在稱讚你的穿著打扮很好看！聽到不要愣住，要趕快道謝說: Thank you!
有很多網紅專門分享穿搭，很常會用到 OOTD 這個術語。
OOTD = Outfit Of The Day 的縮寫，就是今日穿搭的意思。
